More about Riverside Apartments
Riverside has been designated as a National Historic Neighborhood. It is Jacksonville’s first historic district. It is one of Jacksonville’s unique neighborhoods. It features a riverfront setting with many parks. The tree-canopied streets add to the architectural flavor of the area. Although primarily residential, Riverside has three small-scale retail shopping areas.
The first retail area is Five Points. Living in a Riverside apartment makes this area very convenient. Five Points is a small commercial area which is located on and around a five-way intersection between Park Street, Lomax Street, and Margaret Street. It became a shopping area right after World War I. Five Points not only includes artistic type shopping but is home to the Sun-Ray Cinema, formerly known as the Riverside Theater. This theater opened in 1927 and was the first movie theater equipped to show talking pictures. Five Points is classified as edgy, with bohemian character with many independent shops and restaurants.
King Street District is another retail area in Riverside. In 1927, King Street was originally called “White Way” because of the use of white lights all along the outside of the buildings in this area. In 2005, a popular beer bar came into the area and set the tone for King Street. Today, King Street is the home of many bars, restaurants, stores, and night clubs. It also houses many artsy establishments.
The Shoppes of Avondale is the other retail area. It is an upscale shopping center with about 45 storefronts along St. Johns Avenue.
