Mandarin is full of history. It is one of the oldest communities of Jacksonville and you can see that by driving down some of the roads in the area. Located throughout Mandarin you can find expansive historic waterfront mansions with large oak trees lining the streets. Harriet Beecher Stowe had a winter home in Mandarin. Her book, Palmetto Leaves, is based on her experiences while in Florida. While her home is no longer standing, all throughout Mandarin you can see traces of her. What is now the Mandarin Community Club, was the site of The Mandarin School, which educated black and white students together. Stowe was instrumental in spearheading this project. Harriet and her husband, Calvin Stowe, supported the establishment of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior. While the original building was destroyed in 1964 by a hurricane, the church rebuilt and is still there today. You can also visit the Mandarin Historical Society to learn about Stowe’s history and visit other historical sites throughout the Mandarin area.
